ティエリー・ミュグレーは1948年、フランス、ストラスプールに生まれ、10代から服作りを始めバレエ団「the Opera du Rhin」に入ります。そして19歳でパリに渡りEcole Arts Decoratifsにてデザインを学びはじめます。
1968年 ショップのウィンドウデザイナーとしてキャリアをスタート。このときファッションデザインは副業的に行っていました。
1973年 Alain Cardeucとビジネスタートナーシップを組み、自身の名を冠したブランド【ティエリー・ミュグレー】を創設。79年にはメンズラインを設立。
70年代から約20年の間ファッション業界の一線で活躍、しかし時代の流れとともに徐々にブランドは衰退、90年代以降生き残ることは出来ませんでした。
1997年 フランスのコスメブランドClarinsに買収される。この後1992年に発売された香水【ANGEL】がセレブの間で話題となり香水などコスメ系商品として有名なブランドとなりました。
